An in-lab sleep study involves an overnight stay at a sleep center or hospital. Preparing for a sleep study is very important, and there are some steps you can do to ensure a successful test.

On the day of your in-lab sleep study, you should:

  • Try to follow your regular routine as much as possible
  • Avoid napping
  • Eliminate use of caffeine after lunch
  • Shower or avoid using hair sprays or gels that can interfere with the sleep recording

Most sleep clinics want you to go about your nightly routing so as to get the best results. If you over-prepare or do things differently leading up to your sleep study, the results may not be as accurate as they would be if you kept to your normal routine. It sounds crazy, but a sleep tech wants to see you at your worst, so that they can recommend a treatment that is the best. However, there are some things you must do when preparing for a sleep study:

  • Arrive shortly before your usual bedtime, approximately between 8pm to 9pm for an overnight study
  • Make sure you have already had dinner and are ready for bed
  • Bring your medications
  • Bring comfortable clothes that you normally sleep in
  • Bring your mornings bathroom supplies

You will have some time to make yourself at home. There will not be any other patients in your room. You will have a bathroom available to use, and you may have a television that you can watch.
